Amelang & Amelang Piano Duo

Cheryl Amelang is a pianist who loves the Lord and gives Him the glory for her unique creative healing gift on the keys. Paul Amelang, Cheryl’s son, is a gifted jazz pianist, worship musician, composer, and arranger. This summer they will be playing in churches, homes, and venues in Texas sharing their light and love for the Lord through their music, playing as a piano duo their thoughtful arrangements of hymns as well as their creative arrangements of their favorite current worship songs touching hearts at all stages of life.

Cheryl's Experience

Worship Pianist, Worship Leader, Music Director
twelve churches — 1980-present

Cheryl grew up with a hymnal at her piano at all times. She accompanied the children’s choir at First Baptist in Bryan at age eight and was the substitute pianist by age eleven. In addition to her time spent in loyal service to many churches in many denominations in the Houston and Brenham areas, she has had an itinerant ministry to churches in need of a worship musician since 1998. She has a heart for worship training in the lives of young musicians and is writing worship arrangements as well as worship piano curriculum for students and pianists of all ages.

Principal Accompanist
Blinn College, Brenham, Texas — 2001-present

Cheryl accompanies the Blinn Chorale and choral union. Cheryl has accompanied many soloists throughout her career since 1976. She has been the accompanist for many Blinn musicals and various other musical theater presentations. She also has a personal accompaniment production business, recording custom songs that are difficult to find in the theater business.

Brenham Music Academy — 2004-present

Cheryl’s School of Music operated in Houston from 1987-1995, and re-opened in Brenham in 2001. In 2004, Cheryl began recruiting other teachers and moved into the current location for Brenham Music Academy, which currently has eight teachers and approximately 140 students.

Piano Ensemble Conductor
TMTA/BAMTA — 2006-present

Cheryl is serving three years as the Ensemble Coordinator for Texas Music Teachers Association, President of Brenham Area Music Teachers Association since 2009, and the conductor of BAMTA ensemble groups since 2006.

Other Accomplishments

Cheryl has recorded two albums of worship music: Alabaster Box, a collection of original worship piano solos, and Refuge, a collection of her piano arrangements of some of her favorite contemporary worship songs. She was commissioned by the Presbyterian Convention in Oregon to write a custom arrangement of Your Love Flows Like A River, and she is a signed composer with Alpha Major Music Publishing, for whom she has composed Bluebonnet Highway, a piano ensemble for eight hands. Cheryl also performs with the the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra in College Station as the digital keyboardist.

Worship Pianist
two churches – 2012-present

Paul has grown up in the middle of a musical family that loves the Lord, playing since age five. He has played in the family worship band since he was 13. He is a multi-instrumentalist, playing piano, organ, guitar, bass, and drums, as well as singing. He has been writing music since he was 12 years old. He currently plays on a contemporary worship team at Brenham Presbyterian Church and accompanies the choir at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He plays with his family for retreats and itinerant ministry opportunities.

For the last three years, Paul has enjoyed studying piano with John Dujka, jazz band with Craig Garrett, voice with Dan Bircher, and choir with Paulo Gomes, not to mention all his other wonderful teachers. He has met wonderful musicians and made many friends. Paul has recently been accepted into the Jazz Studies program of the University of North Texas in Denton and will start in the fall of 2016. We are all proud of him!

Paul began as an apprentice teacher at BMA as a teenager, and quickly developed his proficiency as a teacher of several instruments, as well as group lessons for bands. He is currently developing and producing a band of young boys known as “The Soul Brothers”, and is becoming well known for his gift in teaching the next generation!

Paul has performed as a soloist all around the Brenham/Round Top area in restaurants and at many private and public functions. Paul has performed in the Amelang-Yarbrough Jazz Band, the High Street Band, the Paul Amelang Band, and The Amelang Brothers Band. Paul has performed with the Blinn Music Theater Band in the musical “Back to the 80’s”, and is also a contract accompanist for the Brenham Jr. High School Choir and Band and Brenham High School Choir and Band.

Other Accomplishments

Paul has had many of his original songs professionally recorded and produced, and continues to write and self-produce original music. In the 2015-16 academic year he made first chair state jazz pianist and performed in the All-State Jazz Band. Paul has been studying sound engineering and has put together his own recording studio, where he has enjoyed recording other local musicians and putting his gifted ears to good use.
